NEOJIBA – Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia
Created in 2007 as one of the priority Programs of the Government of the State of Bahia, NEOJIBA has, as its main aim, to attain social integration via collective practice and excellence in music. In Brazil, NEOJIBA is the first governmental Program inspired by the acclaimed Venezuelan Program ““El Sistema””, created in 1975. NEOJIBA is led by the Human Rights and Social Development Secretariat and it is managed by the Institute of Social Action through Music (Instituto de Ação Social pela Música – IASPM), a non-profit-making organization qualified as a Social Organization. The founding director of NEOJIBA is the conductor and pianist Ricardo Castro. NEOJIBA benefits over 4.500 children, adolescents and youth, through its Orchestral Practice Centers and extension activities, such as the Network of Orchestral Projects of Bahia and the NEOJIBA in the Neighborhoods Project.
“Bahia Orquestral” highlights audio, visual and personal collaborations of the Youth Orchestra of Bahia, the most advanced group of NEOJIBA, a Program of the State of Bahia, created in 2007 and a pioneer in Brazil, inspired by the Venezuelan “El Sistema”.
Recorded on April 8-10, 2013, in the main hall of the Castro Alves Theatre, with a guests-only session in the last night, this is the first DVD of a symphonic orchestra from Bahia, recorded under professional studio conditions. “Bahia Orquestral” is a symphonic orchestra with musicians with ages ranging from 13 to 27 years, playing pieces from the traditional orchestral repertoire, from the contemporary popular music from Brazil and Bahia; it is a young conductor following without score, with authority and passion, an internationally distinguished soloist, conductor and founding director of the orchestra; it is a great name of the Brazilian popular music as a soloist of his own composition, that evolves into a “jam session”; it is a distinguished German “first violin” leading an American masterpiece for the string orchestra; it is an orchestra that has fun and dances playing a colleague`s arrangement for a well-known popular theme; it is an “orkestra” that joins the host orchestra, without conductor, for a version of the Ravel Bolero with afro-rhythms from Bahia; it is the “Learns he who Teaches”, the motto of NEOJIBA; it is a VJ creating performance images in real-time…in summary, it is a sample of the rich experiences and extraordinary collaborations that the orchestral youth of Bahia of 2013 experiences frequently, after 5 and a half years of intense work and dedication.
Through this first of its kind work, the NEOJIBA contributes to sharing a new image of the musical youth of Bahia and to inspiring children and youth. We thank all who enabled the accomplishment of this unforgettable experience, especially the musicians who gave life to the musical notes with competence and generosity.
